1- Talk to your child about their work

Most of the times children know what they are drawing but as adults we may have expectations, rules and structures of what we think a drawing should look like. When asking a child what is this? We are limiting the art. Rather ask ‘can you tell me about your picture’, describe things you see the child is doing for example I see you are making short lines or I see you are using red colour

2- Imitate your child

Let is not aim at drawing perfect pictures in front of children. The aim is not for children to copy us but rather for us to copy children drawing, make big scribbles, draw out of line draw like your child. This will help children to develop their imagination and their creativity.

3- Provide lots of choices

Have different art materials and supplies for children to use and choice from.

4- Support and do not lead

It is very common for adults to direct children art work and this limits their work as well as their fun. Allow children to decide what to do, what materials to use, how and when to use them. Let them be the creator of their own work

5- Keep it open

Instead of planning for children what to do or have something in your mind for them to implement allow them to discover and use their imagination. They may make big mess or change their mind It is ok it is all part of learning and being creative.

Messy...messy...learn and create.

6- Focus on the process not the product

Never let children to worry about what others might think of their work. Let them express themselves freely. If we praise their final work and focus on the outcome, this may lead to the child working towards getting the approval rather than doing what they want to do. Notice their hard work, focus on the process and explore with your child. These are more important that the end product.

7- Let it go

If the environment is safe, then let children to explore as this promotes learning through trial and error. When they receive the right to be free they will learn and they will shine.
